Outdoor Long-Range WiFi Access Point Buyer's Guide
Once Starlink brings internet to a site, the next problem is spreading that signal across a yard, a marina, a campsite, or a warehouse. That's the job of an outdoor access point (AP). This guide explains what "long range" really means, the specs that matter, and how PLZTECH's WiFi 6 outdoor APs compare — so you pick the right unit instead of over- or under-buying.
1. What an outdoor AP actually does
An outdoor AP takes the wired signal from your Starlink router (or a PoE switch) and broadcasts WiFi across an area. "Range" numbers (300 m, 600 m, 700M,1 km ) are lab/open-field line-of-sight figures — real-world coverage is shorter through walls, trees, and terrain. Treat range specs as a ceiling, not a promise.
2. Specs that matter
- WiFi standard: WiFi 6 (802.11ax) gives better multi-device throughput and efficiency than WiFi 5. PLZTECH's 600 m, 1 km, and 7 km units are WiFi 6; the 300 m unit is dual-band AC.
- Transmit power (dBm): Higher dBm = stronger broadcast. The 1 km Mesh AP uses an MT7981B+MT7976DAN chipset with external high-power PA at 24 dBm.
- Ingress protection (IP67): Required for permanent outdoor mounting — dust-tight and waterproof.
- Mesh: Mesh APs self-form a backbone, ideal for covering a large site with several units.
- PoE: Powers the AP over the Ethernet cable — no local outlet needed at the pole.
3. PLZTECH outdoor AP lineup
Model | Range (LoS) | Standard | IP | Best for |
300 m | AC (WiFi 5) | IP67 | Small yard / patio
600 m | WiFi 6 | IP67 | Campsite / marina
1 km | WiFi 6 | IP67 | Multi-building mesh
700m | WiFi 6 | IP67 | Long shot / tower |
4. AP vs. bridge vs. extender
- AP: Broadcasts WiFi to client devices (phones, laptops).
- Wireless bridge: Links two fixed points (building-to-building) — see the 3/5/25 km 5.8 GHz bridges.
- Extender: Repeats an existing WiFi signal; simpler but lower throughput than a wired AP.
If you're covering a site from a single Starlink source, an AP (or mesh of APs) is right. If you're linking two buildings kilometers apart, use a bridge.
5. How many do I need?
Sketch the site. A single 600 m AP covers most campsites and small marinas. A resort or farm with multiple buildings needs a mesh of 1 km units or a bridge to a remote AP. Overlap units by ~20% for hand-off.
6. Install notes
- Mount high and clear of metal.
- Use outdoor-rated CAT cable and a PoE injector within rating.
- Aim antennas at the coverage area; avoid pointing into the ground.
